GETTING THERE
AMTRAK
I love train travel. If I could, I’d take one everywhere I go. The Amtrak app is super easy to navigate and makes booking a train seamless.
AIRLINE APPS
I think at this point every airline has their own app, and I can’t recommend that you download the ones you use highly enough. The apps are great for booking but even better for flight status, delay notifications and the like. The ones I use frequently are Delta, JetBlue and American, but they are all worth the space on your phone.
TRIPCASE
Tripcase is great for organizing multiple flights and hotel reservations, and updates you on flight status without needing to refresh the app. It’s one of the originals and I still use it every time I travel.
TRIP IT
Trip It also organizes flights and hotels, but it also does a hell of a lot more. It will help you find alternate flights on the fly if you need to rebook, will alert you if your favorite seat becomes available and will even keep track of your miles and refunds.
GETTING READY TO GO
PACK POINT
PackPoint will organize what you need to pack based on length of travel, weather at your destination, and any activities planned during your trip. They also have a travel podcast you can listen to.
TRAVEL LIST
Travel list helps you create basic packing lists, insuring that you you won’t leave anything behind.
PACKING PRO
Once you get past the look of this app (it’s a little chaotic), it can prove to be pretty useful. You can make master packing lists for whole families, use their “expert” packer to help craft a list or simply use the sample lists provided.
STYLE BOOK
This is the craziest app ever, and I’m obsessed. More than just a packing app, you can also photograph every single article of clothing you own, create outfits and even calculate your most and least worn pieces. The packing feature is also pretty heavy duty. Choose from the preset lists (New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London) or make your own, upload from your virtual closet and watch as you suddenly have outfits set and ready to go. Their website is also stellar with an incredible section on packing tips that should not be missed.
AT THE AIRPORT
GATE GURU
Yes, Gate Guru gives you itineraries, flight status and the like, but what sets it apart is that it also helps you navigate every terminal of every airport. Once you enter your flight information, the Amenity List will automatically tell you where the nearest Starbucks is.
FLIGHT AWARE
There’s no better app for flight tracking, status updates and airport information. Don’t miss the Misery Map which shows you the daily delays and cancellations by city.
ONCE YOU'RE THERE
CITYMAPPER
With navigation for over 30 cities including New York, Vancouver, Paris and Tokyo, Citymapper’s step by step instructions for walking, driving and public transportation can’t be beat. And with helpful tips like how many calories you’ll burn by walking, it’s a great way to navigate.
GOOGLE MAPS
Obviously.
GOOGLE TRANSLATE
Great for translating, but even better is that you can use your camera to translate text. That means you can hold your phone over a menu in over 26 countries and get the English translation on your screen. It's not perfect (you might find some hilarious translations happening), but it works well enough to make sure you're not ordering horse balls if that's not your thing.
WAZE
Don’t ever use anything else to navigate traffic. Waze is truly magical.
XE CURRENCY
Super helpful for converting dollars to other dollars.
