Here's the thing: During World War I, most airplanes didn't have enclosed cockpits, so pilots had to wear something that would keep them sufficiently warm. The U.S. Army officially established the Aviation Clothing Board in September 1917 and began distributing heavy-duty leather flight jackets with high wraparound collars, zipper closures with wind flaps, snug cuffs and waists, some were even fringed and lined with fur. ANd thus, the bomber jacket was born. today cockpits are locked so tight pilots couldn't possibly need anything more than a tank top, and the bomber has become one of fashion's greatest coups.
